It Happened One Night is one of those timeless classic comedies you can go back to after watching. It is fitting that this film took home many Academy Awards, being that it has memorable scenes, two major stars who deliver (Claudette Colbert, Clark Gable), well-timed comedy and witty dialog, and, of course, a romantic edge between a mismatched couple. Being a Depression era movie, moviegoers could just sit back and enjoy a film with heart and laughs, and take a break from the economic problems of the day (it’s too bad we can’t do the same).
The story involves a runaway heiress Ellen Andrews(Colbert) who has designs on marrying King Westley, and has literally jumped ship and taken off in hopes of getting to New York. Clark Gable plays a tough-minded, gruff newspaper reporter who has recently been fired, and happens to be on the same bus as Andrews. Both meet–seemingly on the wrong foot–when they squabble over who gets the last seat in the back of the bus. After exchanging jab after verbal jab at each other during the trip, Peter (Gable) gets word from a newspaper that he is, in fact, sitting next to Andrews. He has his own agenda–being the first one to break the story, and maybe stick it to his former boss–and he wants to take advantage of this. However, there is a sense that, as the two experience conflict after conflict, that they are falling for each other, even though they are as different as can be, and won’t admit this.
There are several scenes that stand out as memorable. First, the scene where Peter confronts Ellen, saying he had her “pegged as a brat” and “snob” from the start is important to the changing of Ellen’s character. He is direct with her and lays into what he thinks of “her kind.” Second, the famous “hitchhiking” scene is classic. One of the most memorable scenes in all film, this moment really displays Peter’s cockiness. However, Peter is humbled, as nothing he does works to get a car, and this allows Colbert to do her famous “leg” scene with the car hitting the brakes. The scene with Ellen gloating– and Peter sulking– in the back of the car–all the while the driver singing boisterously loud–is great comedy. It pretty much defines the difference of personality between the two characters.
If there is one blemish in the film, it is that the ending and last part gets a little illogical and silly. Ellen has a chance to change her mind, and seems to be a little bit too lackadaisical about it until the very end. I thought the road trip part of the film was the best (the first hour or so), but that maybe the film lost a little luster towards the end.
Still, for what it’s worth, this is a wonderful film, one of those that you can watch if you are in the mood of romantic comedy. It really displays the talents of Clark and Colbert, who have fantastic chemistry, and the exceptional direction from Frank Capra. Not surprisingly, this film took home the five major awards from the Academy Awards, and has been pegged as the standard for “screwball comedy”, although I think it fits “romantic comedy” to a tee.

Best Price Cheap The Story of Alexander Graham Bell [VHS] Discount Review Shop
Those were the very first words spoken (and successfully received by another party) via telephone by Alexander Graham Bell, the Scotsman who invented the telephone. The tale begins in 1875. Young Alex Bell is shown eating cheese and apples while trying to send speech over copper wires. No one thinks much of this idea except the deaf daughter of one of his grudging sponsors (the deaf girl is Loretta Young). Folks were inclined to call it a toy and they kept away from it; Bell himself tended to distust it. When Bell wants an ambulance, he sends a friend out to call one. “This thing will never work” he lamented. But it did of course, and soon the Western Union was trying to claim the patent…Don Ameche does rather well here, playing Bell with surprising conviction. Henry Fonda is fine as the sensible Mr. Watson as is Charles Coburn as the methodical Mr. Hubbard. The most moving scene in the entire film is when a mute boy, who had never spoken before, enunciates the word “father” (sob!). The direction by Irving Cummings is piously sincere.

Gene Wilder and Richard Pryor was a good comedy team of the 1970s, making several hit movies together, this being one of the more memorable.
Viewing this movie recently after a 25-year absence, it was a shock to me to hear the language. I had remembered this strictly as a light-hearted comedy but I can see why it’s rated “R.” That is solely for the language, especially by Pryor, but he was known for his profane humor.
If you can put up with that, the film is downright funny, even today. I found myself laughing out loud at a few scenes, all of which I remembered vividly from several viewings in the ’70s. They are still just as funny today.
Who could forget that mammoth criminal with the long, long name – Erland van Lidth de Jeude? He was the guy that scared the heck out of everyone, just by his physical presence. In real life, that man was the opposite of his projected image on screen. He was a graduate of MIT, an accomplished opera singer, an Olympic wrestler, devoted husband and father, writer, etc. The poor man died at the age of 34.
It also was interesting to see such a young looking Craig T Nelson and JoBeth Williams.

Best Price Cheap Blue’s Clues – Rhythm and Blue [VHS] Discount Review Shop
“Rhythm & Blue”…it’s right there in the title! Parents of toddlers will appreciate this, and your toddlers will especially appreciate this particular Blues’ Video as it consists of rhymes, songs, and learning rhythm.
I think this is the only Blues’ Clues’ video that toddlers really get any education out of. The rest are fun, but because this is made up of all music and rhyming, I think and know from my own experience, that a toddler really can love and learn(without realizing) from this.
Blue wants to play a song game, a rousing “blues clues” game helps figure it out!
Also she wants to do an inside(it’s raining out) musical thing, hence the other episode on the tape begins…
It’s all great fun hearing and singing(yes, even I sang along!) to “two little monkeys”, “if you’re happy and you know it”, “the itsy bitsy spider”, and “head, shoulders, knees, and toes”.
Highly recommending this one!!
